In spite of Thursday’s 3-3 draw against Gambia, Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has refused to lose focus of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

McCarthy indicated that anything is possible in football and that Kenya still has a chance to qualify following the match at Ivory Coast’s Alassane Ouattara Ebimpé Olympic Stadium.

“We have hope. Teams do lose points along the way. Gambia is as likely to beat Gabon as they are to beat Ivory Coast. Anything can happen if you take your opportunities, and it’s still very open,” McCarthy said.

In his first game at the helm, Kenya were content with a draw after debutants Mohammed Bajaber and Wilson Lenkupae, along with captain Michael Olunga, found the net in a sensational match.

McCarthy acknowledged that a draw was not the preferable outcome, yet he was satisfied with the team’s performance and believed there was scope for improvement.

Since this is my first game in charge after just a few days with the national team, I will accept a draw even if it does not benefit Gambia or us. Even though there is much to improve on, I am satisfied with the idea and what I witnessed. However, the optimism that I have witnessed today inspires me. “We can improve dramatically with one or two more training days.”

After five games, Kenya had six points, two fewer than leaders Gabon and two fewer than second-placed Ivory Coast, who had played an additional game against Burundi, who had seven points and were third in Group F.

Gambia lead the Seychelles, who are sixth on a goal difference of -23 after losing all five games.
