Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has addressed the issue of missing President William Ruto’s Kamukunji rally, refuting speculation that he intentionally did not attend the event to steer clear of Governor Johnson Sakaja.
During an interview with Milele FM on Wednesday, 19 March 2025, Wanyonyi rejected assertions that he was purposefully avoiding Sakaja, his possible rival in the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial contest.
He further denied accusations that he missed the prayer gathering for Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission (AUC) candidacy at Bomas because of personal animosities.
Wanyonyi explained that he was abroad for a significant commitment during the Bomas gathering, indicating that he had been made aware of the meeting but could not participate.
Because of my travels, I was unable to attend the Bomas prayer session for Baba. Various leaders arranged prayers and so they all attended and i was fully aware of it, though I was not there.
“I also missed the Kamukunji rally because I was dealing with some grassroots issues,” Wanyonyi responded.
Wanyonyi went on to say that Sakaja hasn’t done much to advance the county and that his leadership is causing hardship for the populace.
He denied claims that Raila Odinga, the head of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), had covertly backed Sakaja, saying that Sakaja is merely trying to gain the former Prime Minister’s favor and has been trying to get political support by copying him.
Sakaja doesn’t skip any of Raila’s events, making an effort to establish a cordial relationship while sincere in her desire for his attention. Despite being the governor of Nairobi, Sakaja is not an ODM member.
Notably, there is a long waiting period, but if he is prepared to leave UDA and join our cause, we will accept him. “If he plans to run for the governorship under the ODM banner in the next election, we will also compete and see who wins,” he continued.
