Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has vehemently denied widespread rumors that he traveled to Vietnam to negotiate the release of Margaret Nduta, a Kenyan woman facing the death penalty for drug trafficking. The claims, fueled by a viral TikTok video, accused Sonko of intervening in the high-profile case.
The controversy began when a TikTok content creator, known as African Sponsor, posted a video alleging that Sonko had arrived in Vietnam to secure Nduta’s release. The video quickly gained traction, sparking intense speculation and discussion online.
However, Sonko swiftly responded, dismissing the allegations as “stupid” and unfounded. In a video posted online on Tuesday, March 18th, he directly addressed the claims, debunking the misleading evidence used to support them.
“I have seen a stupid story going around,” Sonko stated, reading from the TikTok post. “‘Sonko has just landed in Vietnam to negotiate the release of Nduta Margaret, the lady who was supposed to be executed last evening… Will he manage? All the best.'”
Sonko further clarified the situation, pointing out that the TikToker had falsely identified a group of Chinese businessmen in a photo as Vietnamese officials. “He claims these Chinese investors are Vietnamese. This photo was taken yesterday. Let me show you where we took this photo—this is not Vietnam. It was taken here (in my office),” Sonko explained, gesturing towards his office.
In the caption accompanying his video, Sonko wrote: “Ati niko Vietnam: Just seen African 001 has posted on TikTok that I’m in Vietnam trying to negotiate for the release of Margret Nduta. May the Lord stand with Nduta’s family during this trying and difficult moment. May He have mercy on Nduta. May He deliver her from Evil. My He forgive her from all trespasses. May He lead her from any temptation.”
While Sonko has refuted his involvement in Nduta’s case, he is known for his past interventions in assisting distressed Kenyans facing legal or financial hardships. He has often stepped in to provide support by funding hospital bills, legal fees, and repatriation efforts. However, in this instance, Sonko has made it clear that he is not involved in negotiating Nduta’s release in Vietnam.
The case of Margaret Nduta continues to be a sensitive and complex issue, and Sonko’s denial highlights the importance of verifying information circulating on social media, especially during times of heightened emotion and concern.
