Manchester United beat 10-man Real Sociedad at Old Trafford by a hat-trick from captain Bruno Fernandes to secure a quarterfinal clash with French club Lyon in the Europa League.

United were off to the worst possible start when Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the penalty spot after being brought down by Matthijs de Ligt. United needed to win to stay in with a chance of winning trophies in Ruben Amorim’s first season as manager and with the understanding that the competition is their only real hope of securing European football next season.

Igor Zubeldia had taken down Rasmus Hojlund as the Dane was cruising down the Sociedad goal, but Fernandes remained calm, and to the fortune of the home team, they were level within six minutes.

Unaccountably, United only surpassed the others during the third penalty of the evening.

A considerable amount of time after it was established that Patrick Dorgu had been fouled by Aritz Elustondo, he just kept complaining. Not that it was significant, since Fernandes kicked in his 14th of the season from the penalty kick after the third gaffe of the goalie.

Halfway through the second period, Jon Aramburu was sent off for restraining Dorgu, who would have fallen, and shattering the last Spanish visitors’ hope.

Before teammate Portugal international Diogo Dalot’s fourth goal in stoppage time, Fernandes finished low across goal and into the far corner for his second hat-trick for the team.

This was a good start to a week that was tumultuous for Manchester United.

Before Sunday’s match against Arsenal, there were massive demonstrations against the Glazer family, who controlled the majority of Manchester United.

Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said on Monday that the club could fold by the end of the year if he did not implement his sweeping cost-cutting measures, which heightened summer spending worries. CEO Omar Berrada downplayed those worries in a pre-game interview with broadcaster TNT on Thursday.

Ratcliffe also strongly criticized some of Amorim’s players, however, in a BBC Sport interview, when he called them “overpaid” and “not good enough.”

But, in a crisis, the former Sporting midfielder is the one most likely to stand up. He appeared a little anxious as he awaited the referee’s whistle to indicate that it was time to attempt his first penalty, knowing the repercussions of failing. However, Fernandes maintained his composure, as he had done at the beginning of the second half. His man-of-the-match credentials was only cemented by his ultimate finish. Despite Keane’s outspoken criticism, United would be in a much worse situation than they are now without Fernandes.

They were taking United out of sight. The home fans would have jeered Amorim for replacing anyone that night. The response could have been a lot worse to others.

It would not have been unexpected, though, if Zirkzee had decided to leave the Premier League at that time and left during the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old’s high mental strength is evident for all to see. He has scored a few crucial goals, not dropped his head, and now is getting on with the job.
