Celebrities city lawyers Nelson Havi and Ahmednasir Abdullahi on Friday, 21 March, criticized the Dutch King for his encounter with Chief Justice Martha Koome, terming it “ill-advised, poorly timed, and a gross violation of accountability.”

The two attorneys expressed their dissatisfaction with the meeting in a letter to Maarten Brouwer, the Dutch Ambassador to Kenya. They cited the concerns that were prevalent in the judiciary under CJ Koome’s leadership, including claims of judicial corruption and abuse of power.

According to the two, the visit of King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Máxima, represented an endorsement of the perceived corrupt institution, asserting that it contradicted the values with which the Dutch government is associated.

It is with profound disappointment, a keen sense of betrayal, and utter disillusionment that we, the undersigned Chairman/President of the Law Society of Kenya, are obliged to notify you of our complete disapproval and serious dissatisfaction regarding Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima’s agreement to extend a courtesy call to Chief Justice Martha Koome on March 20, 2025,” the letter stated.

It went on to say, “The visit was an official seal of endorsement indicating that the Dutch Government has confidence in Kenya’s corrupt and fraudulent Judiciary, an insult to their long history of seeking a Judiciary free from corruption and inefficiency, and a betrayal to Kenya’s hard-working people.”

During the conference involving the two royals and Chief Justice Koome, the latter underscored the significant topics of discussion, primarily focusing on judicial independence and the necessity to safeguard the courts from external pressures.

Nevertheless, the two lawyers dismissed the meeting, accusing the royals of neglecting the challenges afflicting the Judiciary in favor of diplomatic formalities and photographic opportunities.

Havi has recently led a team of city lawyers in demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Koome and the other Supreme Court judges. He submitted a petition to the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) in January 2025 asking for the dismissal of all seven Supreme Court justices.

In the petition, Havi requested that the JSC instruct President William Ruto to establish a tribunal and initiate the process of sacking the seven, accusing them of gross misconduct and unbecoming conduct among other matters.

Havi and his fellow implored the Dutch ambassador to convey their complaints and condemnation to the Dutch government and the monarchy, citing the adverse consequences of the encounter with Koome.

Respectfully we ask you, in your role as the Dutch Ambassador to Kenya, to convey our firm protest to your government and to contemplate the unfortunate consequences of the Royal visit to Chief Justice Koome,” the letter expressed.

Explaining their dissatisfaction, the two advised that the monarchs would have utilized the State visit to undertake other essential endeavors instead of receiving Koome.

We think that the Netherlands lost an opportunity to effectively engage the Kenyan civil society and other interested parties striving towards a just and equitable society, and a competent Judiciary, as opposed to being partisan with the head of an institution discredited and compromised that is at the end of its term,” they said.

The King of the Netherlands had conducted an official three-day state visit to Kenya, during which he conferred with President William Ruto and participated in discussions with the principal stakeholders in various sectors of the economy.
