Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei on Friday, March 21, provided an update regarding Margaret Nduta, who is presently incarcerated in a prison in Vietnam, indicating that she is in good condition.

Through a statement, Korir disclosed this new development following the successful access of a Kenyan team sent to Vietnam to Nduta, who is imprisoned in Hoi Chi Minh Prison due to drug trafficking charges.

Nduta was condemned to death by a Vietnamese court after being convicted of trafficking more than two kilograms of cocaine and was scheduled for execution on Monday, March 18.

“Pleased to report that our team from Bangkok finally obtained travel visas and arrived at Hoi Chi Minh Prison in Vietnam, where Margaret Nduta is currently detained,” Sing’oei stated. “Pleased to convey that our team from Bangkok has ultimately obtained travel visas and arrived at Hoi Chi Minh Prison in Vietnam, where Margaret Nduta is currently held,” stated Sing’oei.

He added that we can confirm that although deeply distressed, Margaret is managing and has been treated with humanity.

Sing’oei further indicated that efforts were still underway to prevent Nduta from a pending execution through an appeal submitted to the courts, in addition to diplomatic discussions between Kenya and Vietnam.

The PS stated that although Margaret was not represented by legal counsel during the trial, an appeal filed a few days ago will be heard shortly. In the interim, we continue to engage with our Vietnamese counterparts regarding alternative options to resolve this challenging matter. Kenya’s authorities in Thailand are trying to negotiate a stay of execution of Nduta to pave the way for further discussions between Kenya and the Vietnamese government.

The latest development follows the PS’s revelation that he discussed Nduta’s predicament over the phone with his Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Nguyen Minh Hang.

Korir: In a statement issued on Sunday, March 16, stated that while Nduta’s case was challenging and intricate, Nguyen indicated that Kenya’s appeal was under consideration.

Nduta was condemned to death by lethal injection on March 6 of this year after being found culpable of drug trafficking.

The 37-year-old is reported to have been employed by an individual identified as John, who instructed her to transport a suitcase to a woman in Laos. Prior to her apprehension in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, Nduta had successfully navigated three airports.

In her defense, Nduta informed the court in Vietnam that she was not aware of the presence of drugs in her suitcase. Her case has elicited considerable concern among Kenyans as the government persists in its unyielding efforts to secure her release.
